What vehicle GPS tracking is and how a position is produced
Vehicle GPS tracking is the process in which a receiver in the car calculates its exact position from the radio signals of orbiting navigation satellites. The GPS system operated by the USA consists of roughly thirty satellites that continuously broadcast a signal carrying a precise time stamp and their own position.
The receiver picks up signals from several satellites at once and measures how long each signal took to reach the antenna. From those travel times it derives the distance to each satellite and determines its own position using a method called trilateration. For the calculation to work reliably, the receiver needs a signal from at least four satellites simultaneously.
The role of the GPS unit in the vehicle
At the heart of the whole solution is the GPS unit in the vehicle — a small device that combines a satellite receiver and a mobile modem. At SaveTrack we use proven units made by Teltonika, which are among the standards in professional vehicle tracking.
The unit first calculates position, speed and direction of travel from the GPS signal. It adds a time stamp and other vehicle parameters to that data. It then sends the data packet over the mobile data network to a server, where it is processed and stored.
How the position reaches the map
When the server receives data from the unit, it maps the raw coordinates to a specific point and assembles the individual points into a continuous route. The application therefore shows not only the current position, but also trip history, distance driven and time spent on the road.
Refresh rate is an important parameter. SaveTrack updates the vehicle position with a 60-second refresh while driving, so you follow the movement on the map practically live. For a standard mileage log, vehicle supervision or dispatching, that is more than sufficient.
Why the position is not always perfectly accurate
GPS is remarkably accurate, but not infallible. In open terrain the position is normally determined to within a few metres. In dense urban development, in a tunnel or in an underground car park the signal bounces off buildings or drops out entirely, and accuracy falls.
Quality units can cope with this — they also use other satellite systems (the European Galileo, for example) and estimate the position from speed and heading when the signal temporarily weakens. Thanks to that the route stays smooth even in difficult conditions.
Storing location data securely
